$50,000 to Help MS Fest Rock On
February 4th 2010
The Minister for Tourism and the Arts, Michelle O'Byrne, today announced $50,000 in funding for MS Fest, Launceston's biggest annual music event.
Ms O'Byrne said the funding would help organisers buy a range of infrastructure to help the event reach its full potential.
"MS Fest is just days away from staging its fifth festival, and it continues to attract up to 13,000 people every year with a combination of home-grown Tasmanian musical talent along with national and international performers.
"It is a fantastic event that not only provides a high standard of entertainment, but also raises more than $150,000 a year for Tasmanians living with MS and the MS Society of Tasmania - a truly commendable objective.
"The Bartlett Labor Government is extremely proud to be able to assist MS Fest with funding allowing it to further build on an already proven product and grow its appeal into the future."
Ms O'Byrne said the funding would allow the festival to hire and operate a big screen being trialled this year, provide shade sails for patrons and install portable fencing.
"MS Fest aims to be attracting 15,000 people by 2012, and this infrastructure will assist organisers in that aim.
"This event pumps millions of dollars into Launceston's economy and traditionally sells out hotels around the region well in advance.
"I am particularly pleased the organisers intend to develop the festival and maintain a long-term relationship with Inveresk.
"The Bartlett Labor Government is committed to supporting events that not only give patrons a fantastic cultural experience, but also boost our local economy and encourage intrastate tourism.
"MS Fest is a shining example of a festival that not only benefits our community, but seeks to improve the lives of some of the people within our community at the same time, and I wish it all the best for this weekend and for many years to come," Ms O'Byrne said.
