$50,000 to Help MS Fest Rock On

February 4th 2010

The Minister for Tourism and the Arts, Michelle O'Byrne, today announced $50,000 in funding for MS Fest, Launceston's biggest annual music event.

Ms O'Byrne said the funding would help organisers buy a range of infrastructure to help the event reach its full potential.

"MS Fest is just days away from staging its fifth festival, and it continues to attract up to 13,000 people every year with a combination of home-grown Tasmanian musical talent along with national and international performers.

"It is a fantastic event that not only provides a high standard of entertainment, but also raises more than $150,000 a year for Tasmanians living with MS and the MS Society of Tasmania - a truly commendable objective.

"The Bartlett Labor Government is extremely proud to be able to assist MS Fest with funding allowing it to further build on an already proven product and grow its appeal into the future."

Ms O'Byrne said the funding would allow the festival to hire and operate a big screen being trialled this year, provide shade sails for patrons and install portable fencing.

"MS Fest aims to be attracting 15,000 people by 2012, and this infrastructure will assist organisers in that aim.

"This event pumps millions of dollars into Launceston's economy and traditionally sells out hotels around the region well in advance.

"I am particularly pleased the organisers intend to develop the festival and maintain a long-term relationship with Inveresk.

"The Bartlett Labor Government is committed to supporting events that not only give patrons a fantastic cultural experience, but also boost our local economy and encourage intrastate tourism.

"MS Fest is a shining example of a festival that not only benefits our community, but seeks to improve the lives of some of the people within our community at the same time, and I wish it all the best for this weekend and for many years to come," Ms O'Byrne said.

Currently operating 74 weekly interstate return services combined from Hobart and Launceston to the Australian mainland, Jetstar will offer an additional 6 weekly return flights to its base operating schedule to provide 80 weekly return peak period frequencies for the Tasmanian market.

During the months of January and March 2010 (2 January - 31 January and 1 March - 27 March) Jetstar will expand its existing 4 times weekly Brisbane-Launceston A320 service to a daily direct offering with its A320 fleet.

Hawthorn secures 12 games at the ’G

October 30th 2009

The 2010 Toyota AFL Premiership Season fixture was released today, confirming Hawthorn will play seven home games at the MCG plus a further five away games.

Acting Chief Executive Terry Dillon said the strength of Hawthorn's fixture reflected the growth in the Club's membership and attendances, with three home games attracting a crowd of over 70,000 in 2009.

"We are thrilled to have secured these games at the MCG, giving our increasing member base the best chance to see the Hawks in action, he said.

"We have been able to work closely with the AFL to establish strong features in our draw, particularly increasing MCG based games against co-tenant clubs."

In the Club's request to the AFL prior to the fixture being drafted, Hawthorn asked for an increase in games at the MCG and a game in Tasmania on Anzac Day.

Both of these requests are reflected positively in next year's draw, with 12 games at the MCG and four at Aurora Stadium, giving the Hawks 16 games at home venues in 2010.

Hawthorn's season opener is against Melbourne on Saturday 27 March while the Club will play blockbuster matches against Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond at the MCG.

Another positive of Hawthorn's 2010 fixture is the team will only make three trips interstate, excluding travel to Launceston.

2010 promises some entertaining games at Aurora Stadium, with Hawthorn hosting four home games in Tasmania - 2009 finalists Adelaide and Brisbane Lions will make the trip along with Fremantle - plus a pre-season game against Richmond.

Anzac Day footy will return to the Apple Isle, with the Hawks playing North Melbourne in a twilight match on Australia's day of remembrance.

"We are pleased to be kicking off our Tasmanian campaign on Anzac Day and showcasing some great footy for our Tassie members and supporters.

"It will also be a blockbuster game in Round 16 when Franklin and Roughead go head-to-head with Brisbane's Brown and Fevola," Dillon said.
